70% of Ukrainian Losses Come from Missile Fire, Says Fmr. U.S. Ambassador

Within the Obama administration, there is growing support for giving strategic lethal aid to Ukraine, said John Herbst, the director of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Program and former ambassador to Ukraine from 2003—2006.

Within the Obama administration, there is growing support for giving strategic lethal aid to Ukraine, said John Herbst, the director of the Atlantic Council's Eurasia Program and former ambassador to Ukraine from 2003-2006. The United States' new appointed secretary of defense, Ash Carter, has already voiced his support for supplying lethal aid, signaling a likely policy shift.

Since 70 percent of Ukraine's losses on the battlefield come from missile fire, anti-missile weapons, such as the ones the U.S. could supply the country, could markedly decrease the number of Ukrainian casualties, Herbst said.

Herbst spoke with Hromadske International's Ian Bateson and Angelina Kariakina on Sunday, February 8, 2015.
