Ukraine's direct losses from the war are already $97.4 billion

For the third week in a row, the losses from damaged and destroyed residential buildings continue to grow as a result of hostilities. Per the latest data, the number of losses due to the destruction of the housing increased by almost $3 billion. As of May 19, 38.6 million square meters of housing stock were destroyed or damaged. The total amount of this damage has reached $33.9 billion.
In addition, losses from destruction and damage to businesses increased by $207 million in the last week. In total, at least 216 plants, factories and enterprises worth $10.6 billion were damaged during the war.
Since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, 1,067 educational institutions have been damaged and destroyed, including 75 in the last week alone. Losses from the damage to educational facilities are $1.5 billion. Experts also estimate that at least 94.5 thousand cars have been destroyed or damaged since the beginning of the war.
At least 12 civilian airports, 295 bridges and bridge crossings, 591 kindergartens, 574 medical facilities, 108 religious and 179 cultural facilities, 169 warehouses, and 19 shopping malls have been damaged, destroyed, or seized since Russia's war against Ukraine.
The total loss of Ukraine's economy due to the war ranges from $564 to $600 billion. These are both direct and indirect losses — declining GDP, cessation of investment, the outflow of labor, additional spending on defense and social support, etc.

The analysis of Ukraine's economic losses due to the war is carried out within the framework of the Russia Will Pay project by the KSE Institute (an analytical division of the Kyiv School of Economics) with the support of the Office of the President of Ukraine, the Ministry of Economy, the Ministry of Reintegration and the Ministry of Infrastructure.
