Water Supply Resumes in Eastern Ukraine After Shelling

The pumping station for the water supply in Donbas has resumed operation after it stopped due to shelling.

The head of the Donetsk Military and Civil Administration, Pavlo Zhebrivskiy, stated that the pumping station has resumed normal service.

“The system successfully passed the test run, the water went into the filtration station. First the reservoirs will be filled and then, in the evening, water will be restored to people’s taps (each city has it’s own time),” Pavlo Zhebrivsky wrote.

It was previously reported that Donetsk could have declared a state of emergency because of the problems with the water supply.

To recall, on 11 June, the South Donbas water supply stopped working again after the pumping station was shelled. Around 400,000 people were left without their central water supply as a result.

Residents in these residential areas receive their water on a schedule or it is brought in tanks.

The shelling that damaged the pumping station is one of the latest incidents in the ongoing war in Eastern Ukraine between the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the Russian-backed separatists from the so-called ‘Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics’. According to the latest report from the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, ceasefire violations from both sides are on the increase. Since the start of the war in April 2014,10,090 people have been killed, 2,777 of whom were civilians.
