Zelenskiy Gains Comfortable Victory in Ukraine Presidential Election

As of 8:30 a.m. Kyiv time, the Central Election Commission of Ukraine has processed 90.83% of electronic voting protocols. Expectedly, comic Volodymyr Zelenskiy is comfortably winning in the second round of the presidential election.

73.17% or 12,339,611 citizens of Ukraine cast their votes for Zelenskiy, whereas the incumbent president Petro Poroshenko only received 24.50% or 4,132,776 voters. 2.32% of the ballots are deemed spoiled.

The turnout in the second round remained largely unchanged at 62.1%. The first round saw 62.8% of eligible voters exercise their right. The city of Kyiv, and Lviv, and Dnipropetrovsk region were among the most active voters. Zakarpattya, Chernivtsi and Luhansk regions witnessed the lowest number of voters make it to the polling stations.

The final exit poll results were accurate in predicting the outcome: Zelenskiy gained 73.2% of the votes, Poroshenko - 25.3%. 1.5% of the ballots were spoiled.

The current president Poroshenko has already recognized the victory of Zelenskiy and congratulated his opponent on the phone.

Zelenskiy gave the first press conference after the results of the final exit poll were announced. He thanked his family, colleagues and campaign HQ for standing behind him.

​The official results of the second round must be made public before May 4.

The newly elected president will take office before June 3.
