Thousands of people were in Lviv to say final goodbye to Iryna Farion
Farewell to professor and linguist Iryna Farion, who was killed near her home on July 19, took place in Lviv, a hromadske journalist reported from the scene.
At 7 p.m. in the Saints Peter and Paul Garrison Church of the UGCC, the funeral mass began. Thousands of people came to say goodbye to the famous linguist and social activist. Not everyone was able to get inside, so most are waiting outside until they can enter the temple.
It is expected that the farewell in the temple will last until 10 p.m. Iryna Farion will be buried on July 22 in the central alley of the Lychakiv cemetery, not far from the grave of composer Volodymyr Ivasyuk. The funeral was to begin at 2:00 p.m.
The murder of Iryna Farion
On July 19, at 7:30 p.m., the police received a report that an unknown man shot at a passer-by on Masaryka Street in Lviv. It turned out to be Iryna Farion. It was there that the linguist lived.
She was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head. The doctors managed to perform the initial surgical treatment of the head wound, the woman was in a deep cerebral coma and on artificial ventilation. The 60-year-old public figure died after 11:00 p.m. as her heart failed.
Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko and head of the Security Service of Ukraine Vasyl Malyuk promptly report to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the search for the attacker of Iryna Farion.
The case is being investigated under Part 1 of Art. 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — premeditated murder. The sanction of the article provides up to 15 years of imprisonment. As possible versions of the murder, the investigators consider Farion's socio-political activities and personal dislike for her.
Residents of the deceased's building said that for several weeks they had seen a suspicious young man sitting on a bench near her house from morning to evening. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ihor Klymenko, said that nothing is known about this man yet, but he was indeed near the building for several days at the specified time and is probably the attacker.
