Ihor Poklad, composer of Ukrainian classics, dies at 83

Ihor Poklad, a celebrated Ukrainian composer and People’s Artist of Ukraine, passed away at the age of 83, as reported by his wife Svitlana Poklad on Facebook.

“That’s it… I loved, love, and will always love… Please pray for Ihor Dmytrovych, for his immortal soul…” she said on Facebook.

Poklad was renowned for compositions such as “Oy Letily Dyki Husy” (Wild Geese Flew), “Charivna Skrypka” (Magical Violin), and “Dva Kryla” (Two Wings), created in collaboration with poet Yuriy Rybchynskyi and others.

He composed music for dozens of musicals and operettas, including “The Witch of Konotop,” “Christmas Night,” and “Second Wedding in Malynivka,” as well as for films and cartoons such as “How the Cossacks Played Hockey” and “Aeneid.”

In total, Poklad authored over 150 compositions, with his songs featured in the repertoires of most prominent Ukrainian pop artists.

In 2021, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy honored Poklad with the title of Hero of Ukraine.
