Volkswagen, Audi face recall of 2.86 million cars over steering fault
Nearly 2.9 million Volkswagen and Audi vehicles worldwide could be affected by a steering defect that in the worst case could cause drivers to lose control of their cars, according to Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) cited by Euronews.
The potential fault involves a bolt securing the steering gear. Under certain conditions, corrosion can cause the bolt to break, potentially impairing steering and increasing the risk of an accident. The KBA said the case remains under investigation and a final assessment is still pending.
The affected models include the Volkswagen Golf, Golf Variant, Tiguan, Touran and Caddy, as well as the Audi Q3. Volkswagen vehicles potentially affected were manufactured between Sept. 24, 2013, and July 1, 2024.
Nearly 2.16 million Volkswagen vehicles worldwide could be affected, including almost 900,000 in Germany. The potential recall also covers more than 696,000 Audi vehicles worldwide.
Audi said it had launched a precautionary recall after internal inspections found that road salt and other environmental conditions could cause corrosion over several years. The affected Audi Q3 vehicles were manufactured between Oct. 31, 2017, and May 23, 2024. Repairs will be free and are expected to take up to an hour.
The KBA said it was not aware of any accidents, damage or injuries linked to the issue. Owners who believe their vehicle may be affected can contact an authorized workshop and check their car using its vehicle identification number, or VIN.
