Former Ukrainian parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy killed in Lviv: What is known

Andriy Parubiy, former speaker of Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada, was killed in Lviv, the National Police reported on Saturday.

According to law enforcement, the killing occurred around noon on August 30 in Lviv’s Frankivskyi district. The victim died at the scene from injuries sustained during the shooting.

Lviv Oblast Military Administration head Maksym Kozytskyy confirmed that police are actively searching for the shooter.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko and Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko have briefed him on initial details of the incident. All resources are being deployed to investigate and apprehend the perpetrator.

Public broadcasting company Suspilne reported that the assailant, who shot Parubiy, was dressed as a delivery service courier. News agency RBC-Ukraine noted that at least seven bullet casings were found at the scene.

The Office of the Prosecutor General reported that a special “Siren” operation has been launched in Lviv to locate the attacker. Authorities confirmed the shooter fired multiple shots at Parubiy, resulting in his death at the scene.

Background on Andriy Parubiy

Born in Sheptytskyi, Lviv Oblast, Parubiy studied at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and Lviv Polytechnic. He began his political career in the Lviv Oblast Council, serving as a member and later deputy head. From 2007 to 2012, he was a member of Ukraine’s parliament in its 6th convocation, representing the Our Ukraine–People’s Self-Defense Bloc.

During the 2014 Revolution of Dignity, Parubiy was a key participant, serving as the de facto commandant of the Maidan protest camp and leading its self-defense units. In 2014, he briefly served as Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council for less than six months.

In 2016, Parubiy was elected Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, succeeding Volodymyr Groysman, who became prime minister. Parubiy held the position until August 28, 2019.

He was a prominent advocate for the 2019 law “On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language.”
