A 23-year-old Kharkiv resident detonated a grenade on an Ovruch train platform during a border document check, killing himself, a border guard, and two women while injuring 12, Zhytomyr regional police reported on Friday.

The explosion occurred around 10:50 a.m. on Friday on the railway station platform. Preliminary data indicate State Border Guard Service officers were checking passenger documents on a train. At that time on the platform, one of the men pulled out an explosive device, triggering the blast.

As an Interfax-Ukraine source stated: "The man could not explain where he was going or why. The border guard asked him to step out, after which the man detonated what preliminary data indicate was a grenade."

The 23-year-old bomber from Kharkiv died, along with women aged 29, 58 and 82, including the border guard. Another 12 people were injured.

The State Border Guard Service said the bomber had recently been detained for attempting to violate the state border on the western section.

Police preliminarily qualified the incident under the following articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine: paragraphs 1, 5 of Article 115 (intentional murder), Article 348 (encroachment on the life of a law enforcement officer, member of a public formation for protecting public order and the state border, or service member) and Article 263 (illegal handling of weapons, ammunition or explosives).
