Ukraine successfully tested an autonomous drone interceptor for Shaheds — the technology is being scaled up

Ukraine has tested an autonomous drone interceptor in combat conditions, able to lock onto Russian Shahed drones and destroy them. The technology automates 95% of the interception process, announced Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

According to the official, the human role in this system is minimal: the operator monitors the movement of enemy drones in real time, selects a target, and issues a strike command. After that, the system operates completely autonomously, guiding the interceptor drone to the target, autonomously identifying it, and locking onto it.

The minister emphasized that thanks to the support of Brave1 (a governmental initiative for developing defence technologies), the manufacturer was able to go from prototype to successful battlefield deployment in less than a year. The system underwent combat testing in the Kharkiv region.

“Autonomy is one of the key areas of development in modern air defence. Technologies like this enable a faster response to massive attacks and more effective protection of Ukrainian cities. We are scaling up solutions that have already proven their effectiveness in combat conditions,” Fedorov said.
