Hitler Mussolini wins mayoral election in Peru - and he isn't the country's first politician named Hitler

A 45-year-old politician named Hitler Mussolini Simeón Flores has won a mayoral election in Peru, defeating his closest rival by just 25 votes. The center-left candidate is not the first politician named Hitler to win an election in the South American country.

Simeón Flores, representing the center-left Ahora Nación party, was elected mayor of Queropalca, a small Andean district in Peru's Huánuco region, Euronews reported on October 9.

He received 229 votes, or 34.5% of the 663 valid ballots cast. His closest rival, Gaspar Benilde Osorio Zambrano of Popular Renewal Peru, received 204 votes, or 30.8%.

Queropalca has an estimated population of just over 730 people.

According to Politico, the newly elected mayor's official candidate profile provides few personal details and offers no explanation for his unusual name. It identifies him as the manager of the Simeon Sac Investment Group.

The election is not the first time a Peruvian politician named Hitler has attracted international attention.

Hitler Guesclin Alba Sánchez, a politician from the center-right We Are Peru party, served as mayor of the Andean district of Yungar from 2011 to 2014.

In 2018, he ran for the position again against a candidate named Lenin Vladimir Rodríguez Valverde, who attempted to challenge Alba's eligibility.

Alba won the election with 47.7% of the vote.

During his campaign, Alba described himself as “the good Hitler” and used slogans including “Hitler returns” and “Hitler with the people.”

He said his father had been unaware of Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler's legacy when choosing his son's name.

Peru has had other politicians with the same first name. Hitler Saavedra, a surgeon and member of Congress representing We Are Peru, served from 2021 until his death in 2024.

The naming phenomenon is not limited to Peru. In Namibia, politician Adolf Hitler Uunona won his fifth consecutive local election in 2025.

Uunona previously told the BBC that he had considered his name entirely normal as a child.
