Attack on another airfield in Russia and Rutte's visit as new NATO chief: October 3 highlights

Ukrainian drones attacked the Borisoglebsk military airfield in Russia. The newly appointed NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte arrived in Kyiv. US officials assessed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's victory plan. We collected the main news for October 3.

Attack on the Russian airfield

Overnight on October 2, the Ukrainian military attacked the Borisoglebsk military airfield in Voronezh Oblast of Russia.

Defense Forces hit warehouses with KAB guided aerial bombs, SU-35 and SU-34 aircraft parking lots, as well as aviation fuel storage facilities at the airfield. From there, Russian troops actively attack Ukrainian territories with KABs.

New secretary general of NATO in Kyiv

Mark Rutte arrived on an official visit to Kyiv after his appointment as NATO secretary general. This is his first visit in this position.

In particular, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, they discussed Ukraine's membership in the Alliance, the victory plan, the situation at the front, the existing needs of units, and Ukrainian needs in air defense.

In addition, there was talk of interaction using the example of the Middle East, where allies shoot down Iranian missiles. However, Zelenskyy believes that the partners are "not yet ready" for the decision to shoot down Russian drones and missiles.

Another massive drone attack

Overnight on October 2, Russia attacked Ukraine with 105 Shahed drones. Anti-aircraft defense managed to shoot down 78 of them.

One of the drones flew towards Belarus. According to the Belarusian Hajun monitoring group, this Shahed exploded in the town of Kalinkovichi.

Zelenskyy's victory plan was evaluated by US officials

The victory plan, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented to US President Joe Biden and the candidates in the next presidential election, contains "productive steps". The United States has already reviewed it.

Russian mass media tried to blame Ukraine for the attack on the Kursk NPP

Russia announced that a fire broke out near the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant in the town of Kurchatov. These are allegedly the consequences of an attempt by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to strike the nuclear power plant. However, Kyiv denied this and called the Russian statements "false".

Later, the authorities of Kursk Oblast declared that the explosions were not related to the nuclear power plant. A Ukrainian drone was allegedly shot down over the town, and as a result of its fall, explosions occurred in a commercial building.

Zelenskyy and the military commented on the withdrawal from Vuhledar

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the withdrawal of the Defense Forces of Ukraine from the city of Vuhledar in Donetsk Oblast the right step: "They (fighters — ed.) are more important than any buildings."

The Ukrainian Armed Forces noted that the fighters left the city in a controlled manner, and the Russians were too exhausted by their offensive to pursue the Ukrainian troops and capture equipment and prisoners.

Ukrainian ATACMS destroyed a Russian Nebo-M radar

The Ukrainian military hit the Russian Nebo-M radar station with ATACMS ballistic missiles. The system is capable of detecting and intercepting air targets,. The aggressor has only 10 such radars left.
