President Volodymyr Zelenskyy believes that if Ukraine receives an official invitation to NATO, it will force Russian leader Vladimir Putin to start peace negotiations, he told Financial Times journalists after the meeting of the European Council.

According to him, an official invitation to join NATO is the "only way" for Ukraine to survive the Russian invasion. This invitation is supposed to strengthen Ukrainian diplomacy on the way to the end of the war.

“We cannot be very strong without an invitation, which strengthens our diplomatic ways until the end of the war. This war will end when Putin is isolated, and other partners push him to diplomacy," Zelenskyy said.

In addition, he believes that the invitation to NATO will raise the fighting spirit of the Ukrainian people and soldiers, because it will mean "that their children will never die, because we will be a member of NATO."

Previously, Zelenskyy publicly presented the victory plan. It consists of several points: the first — geopolitical — is the immediate invitation of Ukraine to NATO.

US Ambassador to NATO Julianne Smith said that the Alliance does not plan to invite Ukraine to join this bloc in the near future. Meanwhile, the White House says that the member states are holding discussions about the invitation to Ukraine and have not yet reached a consensus.
