Attack on military training ground in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Trump's statement on military aid: March 3 highlights

The Ukrainian Armed Forces confirmed a Russian attack on a training ground in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. The UK disagreed with French President Emmanuel Macron's plan for a month-long ceasefire. U.S. President Donald Trump spoke about whether he would cancel military aid to Ukraine. Here are the top news stories of March 3.

Slidstvo.Info: Journalist Viktoria Roshchina was tortured in captivity

Investigators from Slidstvo.Info in collaboration with Reporters Without Borders and colleagues from public broadcaster Suspilne and Graty media outlet found that hromadske journalist Viktoria Roshchyna was brutally tortured in Russian captivity, where she died in the fall of 2024.

Viktoria's cellmate reported that the journalist weighed less than 70 pounds.

Britain did not agree to Macron's plan

France and Britain failed to agree on a peace plan to resolve the Russo-Ukrainian war, which would have called for a month-long ceasefire.

The Financial Times also notes that the UK has "distanced itself" from Macron's plan. An unnamed British official said that a month-long truce is not "the British plan."

Russians hit military training ground

The Armed Forces of Ukraine confirmed that on March 1, the Russian military struck a training ground in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, where Ukrainian soldiers were stationed.

The State Bureau of Investigation has already opened a criminal case, and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has suspended two military officials.

Trump spoke about the possible suspension of military aid

US President Donald Trump said that he has not yet raised the issue of stopping military aid to Ukraine as he believes that everything "will depend on what happens next."

He also commented on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's statement that a ceasefire with Russia was still "very far away." He said it was "the worst statement" the Ukrainian president could have made.

And US National Security Advisor Mike Waltz said that Zelenskyy is "not ready to talk peace at all," although "time is not on his side."

In response, Zelenskyy emphasized that he counts on the support of the United States on the path to achieving peace.

The IAEA chief commented on the rotation at the ZNPP due to the occupied territories

IAEA head Rafael Grossi said that the rotation of its experts at the Zaporizhzhia NPP, captured by the Russians, through temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories was due to the desire to "protect lives."

He also noted that he allegedly discussed this process with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

Two Ukrainian pilots convicted in Russia

A Russian court illegally convicted two Ukrainian pilots, Dmytro Shymanskyi and Oleksandr Morozov, who were allegedly tasked by Ukrainian intelligence to drop "dirty bombs" from their planes.

According to the “sentence,” Morozov received 22 years in prison and Shymanskyi 26 under the terrorism article. In total, they were found guilty of committing about ten terrorist crimes.

The UOC parish in western Ukraine changed its mind about complaining to Vance

Representatives of the UOC community in the village of Pidzakharychy, Chernivtsi Oblast, said they "made a mistake" by publicly complaining to US Vice President J.D. Vance.

The parishioners explained that "in light of recent events in the world," they understood that their appeal only worsened the world community's attitude toward Ukraine.

A man died in a military recruitment center in Poltava Oblast

A mobilized man who was in the district military commissariat died in Kremenchuk.

The police brought a 48-year-old conscript to clarify his military registration data. He passed a military medical board, which found him fit. Then he expected to be sent to a training center. However, his health condition deteriorated sharply.

The birth rate has reached a record-low level

After the start of the full-scale invasion, the birth rate in Ukraine is 0.9 children per woman — a record low in the country, said First Deputy Minister of Social Policy Daria Marchak.

According to her, the international fertility rate is 2.2 children per woman of childbearing age, and in EU countries this rate averages 1.5.
