34 missiles, 100 drones downed over Ukraine. Russian attack repelled for the first time using Mirage fighters

Russia launched a combined strike on Ukraine’s critical infrastructure overnight into Friday, March 7, using various missiles and drones. Ukraine’s Defense Forces downed 34 missiles and 100 drones, the Ukrainian Air Force reported.

Preliminary data from the Air Force’s radiotechnical units identified 261 aerial targets: 67 missiles of air, ground, and sea origin, plus 194 attack drones and decoy UAVs. These included:

  • 35 X-101/X-55SM cruise missiles
  • 8 Kalibr cruise missiles
  • 3 Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles
  • 4 S-300 anti-aircraft guided missiles
  • 8 X-59/69 guided aviation missiles
  • 194 Shahed attack drones and other decoy UAVs

The attack was countered by anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare systems, and mobile fire teams from the Air Force and Defense Forces. Fighter jets, including F-16s and Mirage-2000s, were also deployed.

“Notably, French Mirage-2000 jets, which arrived in Ukraine just a month ago, joined the defense against an enemy air attack for the first time,” the Air Force said.

By 10 a.m., Ukrainian forces confirmed 134 targets destroyed:

  • 25 X-101/X-55SM cruise missiles
  • 8 Kalibr cruise missiles
  • 1 X-59/69 guided aviation missile
  • 100 Shahed-type attack drones

Additionally, up to 10 enemy missiles missed their targets, and 86 decoy drones were lost on radar with no adverse effects.

Consequences of the attack

The Air Force noted the strike focused heavily on Ukraine’s gas industry, with Naftogaz Group facilities targeted for the 17th time. Energy infrastructure was also hit.

Strikes on critical sites were reported in Odesa, Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk, and Chernihiv oblasts, with rescuers and energy workers responding.
