National Guard confirms Russian attack on Sumy firing range, 6 dead

Ukraine’s National Guard confirmed a Russian missile strike on a firing range in Sumy Oblast on Tuesday killed six soldiers and injured ten during training, with an investigation underway and the unit’s commander suspended, according to NGU’s Facebook post.

The attack targeted a military facility in the Shostka community, where “six Ukrainian soldiers were killed and ten others injured”.

The NGU initiated a service investigation, suspended the unit’s commander, and provided relevant information to law enforcement.

The National Guard emphasized that prior protocols and orders for responding to air strike threats were in place, promising a “strict legal assessment” of all responsible officials.

Background

Russia’s Defense Ministry claimed the Tuesday strike hit a training camp of the 1st Territorial Defense Special Forces Brigade near Shostka, alleging up to 70 casualties, including 20 instructors, and damage to ammunition and ten vehicles.
