Ukraine has repatriated an additional 1,245 bodies of deceased citizens in the final phase of exchanges under the Istanbul agreements, as reported by the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

In total, within the framework of these agreements, Ukraine has managed to repatriate 6,057 bodies of deceased Ukrainians. Moving forward, law enforcement agencies, in collaboration with expert institutions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, will conduct all necessary examinations and identifications of the repatriated remains.

This exchange of bodies took place as part of the recent agreements between the delegations of Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul. Prior to this, the bodies of 1,212 fallen soldiers were also returned.

Earlier, there were three stages of prisoner exchanges. On the first day, June 9, a group of captured Ukrainian defenders under the age of 25 was returned to Ukraine. Subsequently, two groups of severely wounded and ill Ukrainian service members were repatriated.

During the first round of negotiations in Istanbul on May 16, the delegations of Ukraine and Russia agreed to exchange prisoners of war in a "thousand for thousand" format. This exchange took place in three stages from May 23 to 25.
