Ukrainian naval drone kills five elite Russian divers in Novorossiysk
A Ukrainian intelligence naval drone, which entered the bay of the Russian city of Novorossiysk, detonated and killed five elite divers ordered to retrieve the drone for analysis, Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense reported.
During a reconnaissance operation in the Black Sea, one of Ukraine’s strike naval drones penetrated the Novorossiysk bay, where Russia stations its Black Sea Fleet ships.
Due to Russian electronic warfare measures, the drone lost contact with its control center and began drifting. After some time, Russian command ordered the recovery of the Ukrainian naval drone for study.
A group of five elite divers from the Russian Navy’s Underwater Sabotage Forces and Means, a highly trained special unit, was tasked with the mission. According to the DIU, this unit consists of highly skilled reconnaissance divers, whose training requires significant time and financial resources, and they are equipped with top-tier gear.
During their attempt to handle the Ukrainian naval drone, it detonated, killing all five elite Russian divers.
Ukrainian intelligence reports indicate significant discontent among Russian naval personnel in Novorossiysk over the command’s order to retrieve the drone, which led to the loss of the elite unit.
