Ukrainian soldiers, a chief rabbi and the fighter's father gathered on Kyiv's Independence Square on Thursday to bid farewell to Benjamin Aser, a 21-year-old Hungarian volunteer who died in May while serving with Ukraine's Third Assault Brigade.

Aser, a rifleman in the brigade's 2nd Mechanized Battalion, was laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery after the ceremony, where Chief Rabbi Moshe Reuven Azman called him a hero not only for Ukraine and Hungary but for the Jewish people as well.

His father, Nathan Aser, who lives in Canada, wanted his son buried either in Kyiv or Toronto.

Aser had been a contract soldier in the Hungarian army before fleeing to join Ukraine's fight, informing his commander of his intent.

He was killed on May 24.
