The first elements of an anti-drone system have been installed on an observation tower near the Polish town of Krynki, which borders Belarus, says Polish media RMF24.

A radar has been installed on the 70-metre-high observation tower near Krynki. This is the first element of the anti-drone system, which will eventually be installed on four additional towers that have already been constructed.

“The first cluster of the anti-drone system is being installed on this tower, which will protect the Polish border. This cluster will be launched in January,” said Marcin Kierwiński, Minister of Interior and Administration of Poland.

In the first phase, this system will detect and track objects approaching from the east. Eventually, it will also be able to neutralise these drones. This system was entirely developed and manufactured by Polish companies.

Russian drones in Poland

On the night of 10 September, several Russian drones violated Polish airspace. In response, Poland used aircraft for the first time to shoot down the drones. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that Polish airspace had been violated at least 19 times. That time, drones entered Polish airspace from Belarus for the first time.

NATO then invoked its Article 4, which says that “the Parties will consult together whenever, in the opinion of any of them, the territorial integrity, political independence or security of any of the Parties is threatened.”

The Alliance also launched the Eastern Sentry initiative to strengthen the defence of Europe's eastern flank, which, among other things, involves the deployment of ground forces in eight countries.
