Russia 'chooses to end partial silence' after overnight barrage of 216 drones, Zelenskyy says

Russia launched more than 200 attack drones at Ukraine overnight, striking Kyiv, Kherson, Dnipro, Kharkiv, and other regions, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on X, calling it proof that Moscow itself "chose to end the partial silence".
Ukraine's Air Force said Russian forces launched 216 drones overnight, of which 192 were intercepted. Explosions were reported across multiple regions, with fires ignited at a residential high-rise in Kyiv, a kindergarten outside the capital, and a railway facility in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
"We have said that we will respond in kind to all Russian steps. Russia must end this war, and it is Russia that must take the step toward a real, lasting ceasefire," Zelenskyy said.
Where explosions were reported
In Kyiv, debris from a downed drone struck the roof of a 16-story apartment building in the Obolonskyi district, sparking a fire, Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko reported. No casualties were reported.
In the Fastiv district of Kyiv Oblast, the State Emergency Service said a drone strike set fire to a kindergarten.
Windows were blown out in an adjacent four-story residential building, and two private homes were also damaged. No casualties were reported.
In Kherson, a 68-year-old woman was wounded in the overnight attack.
In Dnipro, a 33-year-old man was injured. As of 7 a.m., regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha reported nine Russian drones had been shot down over the region.
Russian forces also struck railway infrastructure in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast in the morning, wounding a train engineer who was heading to a shelter at the time.
In Zhytomyr Oblast, several residential and utility buildings were damaged, along with residents' vehicles, regional governor Vitaliy Bunechko reported.
In Kharkiv Oblast, Russian drones struck the grounds of an industrial facility in the settlement of Velykyi Burluk in the Kupyansk district, setting a bus and a freight truck on fire.
A private residence in the village of Bezruky in the Kharkiv district was also hit. No casualties were reported in either strike.
The city of Kharkiv itself was also targeted on Monday evening, when a drone struck the roof of an apartment building; Mayor Ihor Terekhov reported one person treated for acute stress.
In Chernihiv Oblast, drones struck the Novhorod-Siverskyi and Koriukivka districts, sparking fires that emergency crews extinguished, the State Emergency Service reported.
More about the three-day truce
Ukraine and Russia, mediated by the United States, have agreed on a three-day ceasefire — May 9, 10, and 11. In addition to a cessation of hostilities, it also provides for the exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each country.
On May 10, Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that although there have been no massive attacks on Ukraine since the beginning of the three-day ceasefire, the Russians are not observing a regime of silence on the battlefield and in front-line localities.
The president noted that during these days Ukraine refrained from long-range actions against Russia, but promised mirror actions if the Russian Federation returned to massive attacks on Ukrainian cities.
