Ukraine says strike hit Soyuz rocket engine workshops at Russian space center

A Ukrainian strike on Russia’s Progress rocket and space center in Samara hit workshops where engines for Soyuz launch vehicles are assembled, Ukraine’s General Staff reported on August 19.
The strike was carried out overnight on August 15. According to the General Staff, a fire covering about 5,000 square meters (54,000 square feet) was recorded at the Progress facility following the attack.
Workshops used to service aircraft at the nearby Aviakor aviation plant were also hit, the military said.

The Progress rocket and space center is one of Russia’s key space industry facilities and is involved in producing Soyuz-family launch vehicles.
According to the General Staff, the facility’s products are also used to launch spacecraft and deploy Russian communications satellite constellations used by the military.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously confirmed that Ukrainian forces had struck the Progress facility on August 15. He also reported a strike on Russia’s Savasleyka airfield in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, where aircraft used to carry Russian missiles are based.
