UN Security Council to meet on Ukraine after deadly Russian attacks
The UN Security Council will meet on Ukraine’s Independence Day, August 24, to discuss Russia’s war and recent attacks on Ukrainian civilians, ports, and grain exports, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said.
The meeting will focus in part on Russia’s double-tap strike on a shopping mall in Kryvyi Rih on August 21, which killed 16 people and injured 130, including more than 20 children.
“This strike was a horrific reminder of Russia’s deliberate targeting of families, rescue workers, and critical civilian infrastructure,” Sybiha said.
The Security Council will also discuss Russian attacks on Ukrainian ports and vessels and their impact on grain exports and global food security.
Sybiha thanked Denmark, which currently holds the Security Council presidency, and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen for convening the meeting.
Ukraine is expected to call for stronger international action to stop Russian attacks and protect civilians.
