Ukraine's SBU hits Russian Tu-95MS strategic bomber at Engels airbase, Zelenskyy says
Ukraine's Security Service, or SBU, struck a Russian Tu-95MS strategic bomber at the Engels airbase in Russia, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said on August 28.
The operation was carried out by the SBU's Alpha special operations unit, according to Zelenskyy. The extent of damage to the aircraft was not immediately clear.
The Tu-95MS is a strategic bomber and missile carrier used by Russia to launch long-range cruise missiles, including Kh-101s, against Ukraine.
Russia's fleet of strategic aircraft was previously targeted in the SBU's large-scale Operation Spiderweb in June 2025, when Ukrainian drones attacked several military airbases deep inside Russia.
The SBU said at the time that 41 Russian military aircraft were hit in the operation.
