Ukraine says drones flew over 3,000 km to hit Russian gas plants in deepest strike of war
Ukrainian drones traveled more than 3,000 kilometers (1,860 miles) to strike two major gas processing facilities in Russia's Yamalo-Nenets region, marking Ukraine's deepest strike into Russian territory since the start of the war, Ukraine's Special Operations Forces said on Sept. 9.
The drones targeted the Novy Urengoy gas processing facility and the Purovsky gas condensate processing plant in Russia's far north, the military said.
"To reach their targets, the drones traveled more than 3,000 kilometers. Until today, this was considered an absolutely safe rear area for the aggressor," the Special Operations Forces said.
According to the Ukrainian military, the Novy Urengoy facility has a designed processing capacity of 19.5 million metric tons of raw materials per year.
The Purovsky plant processed 13.4 million metric tons of gas condensate in 2025.
Both facilities are located in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug, one of Russia's key oil and gas producing regions. The Special Operations Forces said the plants play an important role in processing and preparing large volumes of hydrocarbons.
The Ukrainian military did not specify the extent of damage to either facility.
