Ukraine strikes Russia's only ice-free deep-water port on Caspian Sea
Ukrainian forces struck a major Russian seaport on the Caspian Sea overnight on Sept. 10, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed.
The Makhachkala Commercial Sea Port in Russia's Dagestan region is the country's only ice-free deep-water port on the Caspian Sea, allowing it to operate year-round.
Local authorities said drones attacked Makhachkala overnight, sparking fires at port infrastructure. Russian officials claimed all incoming drones were intercepted and that the fires were caused by falling debris.
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces had struck eight Russian infrastructure sites supporting the war over the past day, including the Dagestan port and an oil refinery in Russia's Yamalo-Nenets region.
Other targets were located in the Moscow, Voronezh, Astrakhan and Bryansk regions, according to Zelenskyy.
