Kyiv data center shuts down after series of Russian strikes
A major data center in Kyiv has shut down after sustaining critical damage in a series of Russian strikes, as Moscow increasingly targets Ukraine's digital infrastructure.
Data Center Parkovyi said Wednesday that its Kyiv facility had completely ceased operations and that restoring services at the site was no longer possible.
No employees were injured, and customers' data has been deployed at backup facilities in European Union countries, the company said.
The shutdown follows a series of Russian attacks on Ukrainian data centers since Sept. 23. That day's strikes disrupted internet access for about 100,000 households in Kyiv and the surrounding region.
A DataGroup facility was damaged on Sept. 24, while the Cosmonova data center in Kyiv was struck on Sept. 25 and 26, causing disruptions at several Ukrainian media outlets.
Russia's Defense Ministry has acknowledged targeting Ukrainian data centers, describing the attacks as a forced “digital detox.”
Ukraine has since moved to strengthen protection for data centers and other critical communications infrastructure. The government has allocated Hr 518.3 million ($якщо хочемо — перерахуємо) from its reserve fund to reinforce backup information systems used by state institutions.
