Ukrainian town warns of possible ammonia leak after Russian drone attack

Authorities in the town of Manevychi in Ukraine's northwestern Volyn Oblast have warned residents of a possible ammonia release at an industrial facility following a Russian drone attack that killed one person and injured eight others.
Oleksandr Havryliuk, head of the Manevychi local council, said on Oct. 16 that an emergency situation could develop at one of the town's enterprises, potentially involving the release of ammonia.
Officials have not reported a confirmed ammonia leak.
Residents were urged to remain calm, follow official updates and take precautions if a release occurs.
Local authorities advised people to shelter indoors, close windows and doors, seal ventilation openings and turn off systems that draw air from outside. Residents were also advised to remain on lower floors where possible and follow emergency services' instructions if an evacuation is ordered.
Anyone experiencing a strong ammonia odor, coughing, watery eyes or difficulty breathing was advised to leave the affected area if it is safe to do so and seek medical assistance.
The warning follows a Russian drone attack on Volyn Oblast overnight on Oct. 16. Regional authorities said approximately 20 Russian aerial targets had been directed at the region.
A private enterprise in Manevychi was hit, killing one person and injuring eight.
The strikes also damaged critical infrastructure across Volyn Oblast. As of 10:47 a.m. local time, approximately 270,000 electricity customers were without power.
Authorities have not announced whether the damaged facility has released any hazardous substances.
