Vinnytsia left without power as Russia strikes Ukrainian cities overnight, killing one and injuring at least 20

Russian overnight attacks on Ukraine on October 17 left the central city of Vinnytsia without electricity, killed an ambulance driver in Kherson and injured at least 20 people in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, including children, according to local authorities.

Vinnytsia Mayor Serhiy Morhunov said the city had lost power following the Russian attack, with critical infrastructure operating on backup generators. Electric public transport was suspended, with additional buses and minibuses deployed to serve passengers.

In the southern city of Kherson, Russian forces carried out several waves of airstrikes on the Korabelnyi district, killing a 64-year-old ambulance driver, according to the city military administration.

Around 15 other people were injured, including an 11-year-old girl, a female paramedic and a family with an infant who were inside their apartment when the attack occurred. The victims suffered concussions, head injuries and other wounds.

In Zaporizhzhia, Russian forces struck a residential area at around 5 a.m., damaging apartment buildings and setting vehicles on fire, regional governor Mykhailo Semikin said.

Five people were injured, including a child.

Russian forces also struck an industrial facility in Kryvyi Rih, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, according to regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha. Information about possible casualties was still being clarified.

Hundreds of drones and multiple missile types

Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 332 drones overnight, including 31 jet-powered drones, along with Iskander-M/KN-23 ballistic missiles, Kh-22/Kh-32 cruise missiles and four sea-launched Kalibr cruise missiles.

The drone attack included Shahed-type attack drones, S-8000 Banderol drones, Gerbera drones and decoys.

As of 8 a.m., Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 289 drones and intercepted all four Kalibr missiles, according to preliminary Air Force figures.

The Air Force reported strikes at 22 locations and falling debris from intercepted targets at three others.

The attack was still ongoing at the time of the report, with several Russian drones remaining in Ukrainian airspace.
