Lockheed Martin explores F-16 variant tailored specifically to Ukraine's needs - Defence Blog

US defense manufacturer Lockheed Martin is promoting the idea of an F-16 fighter jet variant tailored to Ukraine's needs, featuring an upgraded radar, extended range and improved capabilities against drones and missiles, Defence Blog reported on October 21, citing sources at the company.
One option under consideration would equip the aircraft with an active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar, allowing Ukrainian pilots to detect low-flying drones and cruise missiles earlier than with the radars installed on their current F-16s.
The company is also considering integrating a wider range of European weapons, including guided bombs and cruise missiles.
However, no formal negotiations on developing a Ukraine-specific version are underway, according to the report. Its potential cost, production numbers and delivery timeline remain unknown, and any such program would require approval from Washington.
The proposal comes as Lockheed Martin expands its cooperation with Ukraine.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met company representatives in Kyiv on October 19 to discuss continued F-16 support, maintenance and repairs in Ukraine, as well as supplies of interceptors for Patriot air defense systems.
Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of F-16s in intercepting Russian drones during mass attacks.
"Especially ahead of a difficult winter, during massive attacks with Shaheds, the F-16s destroy them," he said. "We are counting on the program continuing."
Ukraine currently operates older F-16 aircraft supplied by European partners. Unlike newer Block 70 variants equipped with AESA radars, Ukraine's jets use mechanically scanned radar systems.
Defence Blog reported that the proposed upgrades could help Ukrainian pilots detect small, low-flying targets more effectively.
The company has not publicly announced a contract or a development program for the proposed aircraft.
