Ukraine maintained high interception rate against Russian jet-powered drones despite Starshield restrictions - ISW

Ukraine's interception rate against Russian jet-powered drones declined slightly during restrictions on Starshield satellite communications but remained relatively high, according to an analysis by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
ISW found that the interception rate fell from approximately 77% to 74% during the October 14–24 period, when restrictions affected Ukraine's access to high-speed Starshield communications.

The figures represent a decline of three percentage points, although the available data do not establish that the communications restrictions alone caused the change.
According to ISW, interceptor drones offer Ukraine its best long-term option for defending against Russia's increasingly widespread use of jet-powered attack drones.
These interceptors require reliable high-speed communications to engage fast-moving targets, making access to Starshield particularly important.
Ukraine also uses F-16 fighter jets equipped with air-to-air missiles and cannons to intercept Russian drones. Automated gun turrets are being deployed around Kyiv, although their installation requires additional resources and time.
ISW assessed that expanding Ukraine's interceptor drone capabilities offers the strongest prospect of maintaining high interception rates against Russian jet-powered drones over the longer term.
Starshield restrictions and restoration
Ukraine's Defense Ministry previously reported that SpaceX restricted the operation of Starshield terminals used by Ukrainian forces on October 14.
Ukrainian military officials warned that the speed restrictions could undermine the effectiveness of interceptor drones, which need to fly fast enough to engage jet-powered Russian aircraft.
The White House denied involvement in the restrictions, attributing them to a technical malfunction.
On October 24, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara said Starlink and Starshield communications had been restored to speeds sufficient for military use.
Latest Russian attack
During Russia's overnight attack on October 26, Ukrainian air defenses shot down or suppressed 56 of the 70 jet-powered drones launched, according to the Air Force.
That represents an interception or suppression rate of 80% for jet-powered drones in the latest reported attack.
Russia launched 140 drones in total overnight, including 70 jet-powered models.
