Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant worker killed in drone attack, IAEA says

A worker at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in southern Ukraine was killed in a drone attack on October 29, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said, citing information it had received.

The victim was reportedly a welder at the plant’s centralized repair workshop, according to the IAEA.

IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi condemned the incident, saying that any attack on nuclear plant personnel was “completely unacceptable” and violated the agency’s Seven Indispensable Pillars for Nuclear Safety and Security during an armed conflict.

Grossi renewed his call for maximum military restraint to prevent the risk of a nuclear accident.

The IAEA did not identify who was responsible for the drone attack.

Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power station, has been under Russian occupation since March 2022.
