Zelensky at UN General Assembly, Zaporizhzhia NPP goes blackout, drones disrupt flights in Oslo and Copenhagen: September 23 latest

President Zelenskyy arrived at the UN General Assembly in New York. Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant went blackout for the tenth time during Russian occupation. Drone sightings disrupted flights in Norway and Denmark. Ukraine launched drone attack on Moscow.

Drone sightings in Norway and Denmark

Unknown drones were spotted in the sky over Norway overnight on September 23, causing a temporary disruption in Oslo Airport operation.

According to Norwegian media reports, the drones were spotted over Akershus Fortress. Norwegian police also reported the arrest of two Singaporean citizens in connection with “illegal drone flights.”

Copenhagen Airport also suspended operations due to drones on the evening of September 22. Denmark Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called the drone sightings over Copenhagen airport "the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure so far." 

She also doesn't rule out Russian involvement, although Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov says these allegations are "unfounded".

Russia attacks Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, and Kirovohrad regions

Russian forces attacked Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, and Kirovohrad regions. A woman was killed in the strike on the Odesa region. In the Kirovohrad region, Russia attacked railway infrastructure, causing delays to five trains.

The occupiers also attacked Zaporizhzhia with aerial bombs again overnight on September 23, killing one man. During the day, the Russians continued attacking the city, killing one person and injuring 15 others.

Zelenskyy arrived at the UN General Assembly

President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in New York for the UN General Assembly meeting.

Upon arrival, the president spoke with Kazakhstan leader Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde, and US Special Envoy Keith Kellogg.

In the evening, Volodymyr Zelensky met with his US counterpart, Donald Trump, describing the meeting as “good and fruitful.”

Dozens of drones over Moscow

Dozens of drones were attacking the Russian capital, Moscow, starting from the evening of September 22 and throughout the night. Mayor Sergey Sobyanin claims at least 41 drones were allegedly downed over the city. 

At midnight, Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that 81 Ukrainian drones had been downed over the Moscow region, Belgorod, Bryansk, Kaluga, Kursk, Rostov, Ryazan and Tula regions, occupied Crimea, and the Black Sea.

Trump believes NATO should shoot down Russian jets violating Alliance airspace

During the press conference with Volodymyr Zelensky, US President Donald Trump said that NATO members should shoot down Russian aircraft that violate Alliance airspace.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said no one is going to shoot down Russian jets unless they’re attacking.

And NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized that NATO will be assessing the level of threat in each individual case of violation of Alliance airspace and, based on this, will decide whether to shoot down the objects or not.

Zaporizhzhia NPP went blackout

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant went blackout. At 4:56 PM local time, the only power transmission line through which the NPP received power from the Ukrainian system was disconnected. As a result, ZNPP switched to diesel generators to power its own needs.

It's the tenth blackout since the start of the Russian occupation of the plant. Ukraine's Ministry of Energy says it was a severe violation of the conditions for normal plant operation.
