German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested that Russia may be behind recent drone incursions into the country, Reuters reported on Sunday.

Merz emphasized that the frequency of airspace violations across Europe has been unprecedented, even compared to the Cold War era.

At the same time, Merz noted that each drone that breached European airspace lacked a combat payload. According to him, they were conducting reconnaissance flights.

In the early hours of October 3, unidentified drones were spotted near Munich's airport. This led to a temporary suspension of operations, resulting in the cancellation of 17 flights and the diversion of 15 others to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna and Frankfurt. Less than a day later, Munich Airport halted operations again due to the appearance of unidentified drones.

Earlier, unidentified drones were also detected in Germany's Schleswig-Holstein region. Local authorities suspected the drones were deliberately flying over key critical infrastructure sites.

Airspace violations in Europe

Since late August, European countries have recorded airspace violations, such as unidentified drones flying over local airports.

For instance, on the evening of September 22, Copenhagen's airport suspended operations due to unidentified drone activity. Law enforcement suggested it was the work of a "capable actor" with the resources, will and tools to carry out such actions.

In addition, Denmark's Armed Forces reported that overnight into September 28, military personnel spotted drones near several army facilities.

Following Denmark, Norway reported drone interference, which led to a suspension of operations at Oslo's airport. Drones were also detected in Germany, where they flew over key critical infrastructure sites, and in France near a military base.

On October 1, French authorities detained an oil tanker flying the flag of Benin, suspected of belonging to Russia's "shadow fleet." Media reported that the tanker is one of three vessels Danish authorities suspect of involvement in drone flights over the country.
