Ratko Mladic, Bosnian Serb general convicted of genocide, dies at 84
Ratko Mladic, the former Bosnian Serb military commander sentenced to life in prison for genocide and war crimes committed during the Bosnian War, has died at the age of 84, Reuters reported on August 27, citing a UN official.
Mladic died in a hospital at the UN detention facility in The Hague. He had suffered from serious health problems for years and had previously sought early release on medical grounds.
In 2017, the UN war crimes tribunal convicted Mladic of genocide over the 1995 Srebrenica massacre, in which more than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed. He was also convicted of crimes including persecution, forced displacement, terrorizing civilians during the siege of Sarajevo and taking UN peacekeepers hostage.
Mladic commanded the Bosnian Serb army during the 1992–1995 Bosnian War. He spent nearly 16 years evading justice before being arrested in Serbia in 2011.
His life sentence was upheld on appeal in 2021.
