Germany successfully tests Israeli ballistic missile with 500-km range
Germany successfully tested an Israeli-made LORA ballistic missile in the North Atlantic overnight, as Berlin considers acquiring new long-range weapons, Reuters reported, citing German military officials.
The LORA missile, built by Israel Aerospace Industries, has a range of up to 500 kilometers (310 miles), according to Germany's Defense Ministry.
Germany currently has no ballistic missiles in its arsenal. Its existing Taurus cruise missiles have a range of more than 500 kilometers but fly significantly slower than ballistic missiles.
“Our units can successfully deploy the system, and its potential range exceeds anything we have seen before,” German Navy chief Jan Christian Kaack said following the test.
“In terms of protecting Germany and our allies, this test marks a new chapter in deterrence and maritime defence readiness,” he added.
Berlin is involved in several multinational programs to develop long-range missiles and is also considering purchasing such weapons.
The test came hours after Germany formally blamed Russia for an attempted explosive drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport and announced measures against Russian interests in response.
Germany is also developing an upgraded version of its Taurus cruise missile, the Taurus NEO, with production scheduled to begin in 2029. The German military currently has around 600 Taurus missiles.
