Zelenskyy, Trump agree to meet in New York after phone call
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he and U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to meet in New York during a phone call on Sept. 20.
"We agreed on a meeting in New York, and this meeting could change a lot," Zelenskyy said.
He did not specify when the meeting would take place.
According to Zelenskyy, the two leaders discussed diplomatic efforts to end the war as well as possible de-escalation measures and issues related to energy, food security and the protection of civilians.
"The peace track is the number one priority," Zelenskyy said, adding that Ukraine was working with the U.S. team and was ready to take "truly serious steps."
Zelenskyy also thanked Trump for the recent visit to Kyiv by U.S. envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, saying the two sides had discussed "substantial details" during their trip.
The Ukrainian president also thanked Trump for signing the Lindsey Graham sanctions legislation targeting Russia.
Ukraine's Foreign Ministry had previously said preparations were underway for a meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump, alongside meetings with members of the U.S. Congress, business representatives and the Ukrainian community in the United States.
