Ukraine to train Syrian deminers, share drone-based mine detection technology
Ukraine will train Syrian demining specialists and share technology for using drones to detect mines and map contaminated areas under a new agreement between the two countries.
The intergovernmental agreement on mine action was signed in Damascus by Ukrainian Deputy Economy and Environment Minister Ihor Bezkaravainyi and Syrian Deputy Minister for Emergency Situations and Disaster Management Mustafa Munir.
The agreement covers clearing war-affected land and returning it to productive use, as well as developing information management systems to help prioritize areas for demining.
Ukraine will also provide training in non-technical surveys, demining and quality management.
Bezkaravainyi said Ukrainian experience with drones could help Syria remotely detect mines and other explosive remnants of war and create maps of contaminated areas.
“For Ukraine, it is very important to share our experience in mine action with countries that, like us, have suffered contamination from explosive remnants of war,” he said.
A Ukrainian delegation also visited areas where Syrian specialists are currently carrying out demining work.
