Kallas proposes EU’s biggest sanctions package against Russia since 2022

Kallas proposes EU’s biggest sanctions package against Russia since 2022

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas says she plans to propose a new package of sanctions against Russia this fall that could become the bloc’s largest since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Kallas made the announcement in an interview with German newspaper Die Welt.

If the package is approved, the number of sanctioned Russian individuals and companies would increase by around one-third, according to Kallas.

“For the fall, I am proposing the most extensive package of sanctions since the beginning of the war. […] The pressure must continue to increase until Moscow ends its war,” Kallas said.

She also said that European sanctions have already caused Russia €1 trillion in losses.

The European Union has adopted 21 packages of sanctions against Russia since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.

The Financial Times previously reported that the EU was considering a different approach to sanctions after Greece held up the bloc’s 21st package for weeks.

One option gaining support within the European Commission and among some of the EU’s strongest supporters of Ukraine would be to introduce sanctions individually or in smaller thematic packages, reducing the risk that broader measures could be delayed by national vetoes.
