Trump says ‘major progress’ being made toward US Army base in Poland
U.S. President Donald Trump said "major progress" is being made toward establishing a U.S. Army base in Poland, months after Warsaw formally submitted a proposal for a new permanent American military base in the country.
"Thanks to the bold leadership of my friend, Karol Nawrocki, President of Poland, major progress is being made toward establishing a U.S. Army base in Poland," Trump wrote on Truth Social.
"If this happens, the location will be announced very soon," he added, calling the potential base a "historic step" for the U.S.-Polish alliance.
Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz submitted a proposal for a new permanent U.S. military base in Poland to the Pentagon in June.
Trump later announced that the United States would send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, citing his close relationship with Nawrocki.
Polish officials have repeatedly pushed for a larger and more permanent U.S. military presence in the country. Nawrocki has also said Poland would be willing to host American troops withdrawn from Germany.
The discussions come as the United States reduces the number of its combat brigades in Europe from four to three.
Earlier on Sept. 17, Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that Poland was stepping up protection of its airspace following recent Russian "provocations and acts of aggression," including by increasing the activity of F-16 fighter jets and helicopters.
