Iran weighs strikes on US military targets in Europe if war escalates - FT
Iran has considered striking U.S. military targets in Europe if Washington escalates the war, the Financial Times reported, citing people close to the Iranian regime.
According to the FT, Iranian forces have assessed potential strikes on U.S. assets in southeastern Europe, including in Bulgaria, which recently approved the use of Bezmer Air Base by U.S. refueling aircraft.
Cyprus is also among the potential targets being considered in the event of renewed U.S. attacks, one of the FT's sources said. Iranian forces have separately examined the possibility of targeting subsea fiber-optic cables in the Strait of Hormuz.
“If the U.S. goes too far, Iran will defend itself at any price, go beyond the region and hit Europe too,” one person close to the regime told the newspaper.
Sidharth Kaushal, a research fellow at the London-based Royal United Services Institute, described the missile threat to targets in Europe as “real, but limited.” He said Iran could use medium-range ballistic missiles against U.S. assets in southern and southeastern Europe, although their effectiveness would decline at longer ranges.
Weeks of diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran have failed to produce a breakthrough in efforts to resume negotiations, according to the FT.
