Ukraine, UK team up to develop AI-powered military technology

Ukraine and the United Kingdom have agreed to jointly develop and deploy AI-powered military capabilities, combining Ukraine’s battlefield experience with British technological and research expertise.

The two countries announced the partnership in a joint declaration of intent, saying they aim to develop “next-generation, AI-enabled armed forces.”

The cooperation will cover joint AI models, secure access to data and computing resources, as well as the development, testing and deployment of new military capabilities. British and Ukrainian companies, universities and research institutions are also expected to take part.

The UK government described Ukraine’s operational experience as “unrivalled,” saying it would be combined with Britain’s technological, industrial and research capabilities.

The partnership will initially focus on pilot projects already underway, with further arrangements expected within the next few months. The declaration is not legally binding.

Ukraine has already been expanding the use of AI in its military. The Defense Ministry recently opened its Avengers Labs platform to Ukrainian defense companies, allowing them to train AI models for unmanned systems using real battlefield data.

The platform uses some 5 million battlefield images, most collected through Ukraine’s DELTA combat system. According to the Defense Ministry, AI analysis of the footage can identify about 70% of enemy targets in real time, during both day and night.
