Trump speaks with Putin after US envoys' visits to Moscow, Kyiv
U.S. President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Russian leader Vladimir Putin on Sept. 8 following visits by Trump's envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv, the Kremlin said.
According to Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov, Trump and Putin discussed the results of the envoys' meetings in the two capitals and exchanged views on efforts to end Russia's war against Ukraine.
Ushakov said Putin gave Trump his assessment of the peace process and welcomed U.S. mediation efforts. Trump stressed the need to end the war, which could pave the way for a broader restoration of U.S.-Russian relations, according to the Kremlin aide.
Putin also told Trump that Russia had no plans to attack European countries, dismissing concerns about a Russian threat to Europe.
The White House has not yet released its own account of the call.
Witkoff and Kushner met Putin in Moscow on Sept. 5 before traveling to Kyiv for talks with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukrainian officials on Sept. 6.
The U.S. envoys have been exploring possible steps to reduce the intensity of fighting during the coming winter while seeking to restart broader peace negotiations. No agreement on a ceasefire or other de-escalation measures has been announced.
