Kyiv’s St. Sophia Cathedral undergoes first dome restoration in 50 years

Restoration work has begun on the southeastern dome of Kyiv’s St. Sophia Cathedral, with parts of the historic structure being renovated for the first time since the 1970s, the National Conservation Area “St. Sophia of Kyiv” announced on November 4.
Workers have erected scaffolding and a protective canopy to allow restoration to continue in poor weather. The main work on the dome is expected to be completed before winter.
Similar restoration has already been carried out on the cathedral’s northeastern dome, where specialists reinforced and partially replaced structural elements, treated wooden components against fire and biological damage, restored copper roofing and renewed decorative features.
“Today, Ukraine is defending not only its territory but also its historical memory, cultural heritage and identity,” said Nelia Kukovalska, director general of the conservation area.

The work is part of a broader project to restore all the cathedral’s domes and eventually its entire roof.
Ukraine’s Culture Ministry allocated 15 million hryvnias ($360,000) to the project in 2026, while private donors helped accelerate work ahead of the cold season.
Restoration plans were prepared in 2022. The entire project, including structural repairs, roofing and dome gilding, is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028, provided funding remains stable.
St. Sophia Cathedral, built in the 11th century, is one of Ukraine’s most important historic landmarks. Together with its associated monastic buildings, it became part of Ukraine’s first UNESCO World Heritage listing in 1990.
