Princess Diana's iconic 'revenge dress' heads to auction for up to $300,000
Princess Diana's iconic black “revenge dress,” worn on the night Prince Charles publicly admitted to infidelity, is heading to auction with an estimate of up to $300,000, BBC reports.
Diana wore the black silk dress to a fundraising event at London's Serpentine Gallery in 1994, hours after a televised interview aired in which her estranged husband admitted he had been unfaithful during their marriage.
The interview's contents had leaked several days earlier, and Diana's first public appearance after the broadcast was widely interpreted as her response. The outfit went on to become one of the defining fashion moments of the 1990s.
Her stylist, Anna Harvey, later said Diana “wanted to look a million dollars.” The princess made a last-minute wardrobe change, setting aside a Valentino gown for the off-the-shoulder dress by Greek designer Christina Stambolian.
The dress last went to auction in 1997, when Diana sold 79 of her dresses to raise money for charity. It was bought for £39,098.
Sotheby's will auction it in New York on Dec. 9 and expects it to fetch up to £220,000 ($300,000).
