Ukraine and Portugal sign security agreement. Kyiv to receive €126 million for defense in 2024

Ukraine and Portugal signed a bilateral agreement on cooperation in the security sphere. In particular, the document provides for assistance to the Ukrainian army for this year, reported the Office of the President.

According to the agreement, in 2024, Portugal undertook to provide Ukraine with at least €126 million of military support, including material and financial contributions. This year Lisbon has already allocated €100 million euros for the Czech initiative to purchase ammunition in support of Ukraine.

In addition, the agreement confirms Portugal's participation in the F-16 coalition, an international coalition of maritime security capabilities, as well as in the large-caliber munitions procurement program, demining efforts, and strengthening maritime security.

The agreements provide for cooperation between the two countries in the field of defense industry, intelligence, fight against organized crime and propaganda, as well as countering chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear risks.

Also, in the agreement, Portugal confirmed its support for Ukraine's accession to the EU and NATO.

What are security agreements?

In 2023, on the sidelines of the July NATO summit in Vilnius, the leaders of the "Group of Seven" (G7) agreed on a Joint Declaration of Support for Ukraine. The countries noted that each would work with Ukraine on specific bilateral long-term obligations and agreements in the field of security. Ukraine, in turn, undertook reforms.

More than 20 countries joined this initiative. Britain became the first country to sign a final agreement. Since then, 11 more countries have signed bilateral agreements with Ukraine: Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Canada, the Netherlands, Finland, Latvia, Spain, Belgium, and now Portugal.
