EU leadership and leaders of states arrive in Kyiv on third anniversary of full-scale invasion

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa arrived in Kyiv on the third anniversary of the start of Russia's full-scale invasion. They were followed by leaders from a number of European countries and Canada, the European Commission chief announced on X.

Von der Leyen emphasized that Ukraine is Europe. "In this fight for survival, it is not only the destiny of Ukraine that is at stake. It’s Europe’s destiny," the head of the European Commission added.

Costa briefly commented on this visit: "In Ukraine, about Ukraine, with Ukraine."

Latvian President Edgars Rinkėvičs, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also arrived in Kyiv on the morning of February 24, public broadcaster Suspilne reported.

A third train with foreign delegations later arrived in the capital. Among the guests of Kyiv are Finnish President Alexander Stubb, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, the leader of Iceland, Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

The day before, the flag of Ukraine was shown on the European Commission building. Ursula von der Leyen emphasized that these are "the colors of resistance against imperialism."

"Our brave neighbors, partners, and future members of the EU," the head of the European Commission said about Ukraine.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that leaders of 13 countries would arrive in Kyiv on February 24 to participate in the summit. Another 24 leaders would join online.

"The leadership of the European Union will be here, in Kyiv, the leadership of the European Parliament will be there, many delegations. The meetings will be held by the speaker of our state, I will have meetings with leaders," he noted.

The discussion will focus on technologies, strategy for the coming weeks, and formats of security guarantees for Ukraine.
