EU imposes new sanctions against Wagner PMC, Ukrenergo completes restoration in Odesa: last night's highlights

The European Union has imposed new sanctions against Wagner, and Ukrenergo has completed restoration work in Odesa, so there should be more electricity there now. Here is what you may have missed from the previous night.

New sanctions against Wagner

On February 25, the European Union announced new sanctions against the Russian private military company Wagner for its actions in the Central African Republic, Sudan, and Mali, as well as in Ukraine.

Namely, 11 individuals and 7 legal entities were added to the sanctions list, including two commanders who took an active part in the seizure of the Ukrainian town of Soledar in Donetsk Oblast in January 2023.

The sanctions include an asset freeze, and EU citizens and companies are prohibited from providing funds to the sanctioned persons. Individuals are also banned from entering or transiting the EU.

Completion of reconstruction work in Odesa

The power supply to Odesa has improved since the evening of February 25 due to the completion of restoration work by Ukrenergo employees, said Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, the company's chairman of the board.

"From tonight, there is more power in Odesa. I thank my colleagues for weeks of hard work on complex damages after missile and drone attacks. Use it sparingly," he wrote.

Scholz's appeal

During talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on February 25 sought assurances from India that it would support or at least not block Western efforts to isolate Russia over its war against Ukraine, AP reports.

Modi maintained his cautious approach and said that India wants the war to end through dialogue and diplomacy. He added that his country is "ready to contribute to any peace initiative."

The Indian prime minister refrained from any open criticism of Russia, as Moscow is the main supplier of arms, oil and other economic needs of India, the agency noted.

Kazakhstan supports China's position on ending the war

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan has supported Beijing's position on ending the war. The ministry called on the parties "involved in the military conflict" to "show goodwill", stop hostilities and sit down at the negotiating table as soon as possible.

"Kazakhstan welcomes China's position on the political settlement of the Ukrainian crisis, which deserves support as an end to bloodshed on the basis of the territorial integrity, independence and sovereignty of states in accordance with the fundamental principles of the UN Charter," the ministry said.
