Russia launches 164 drones at Ukraine overnight, hitting warehouses and shopping center
Russian forces launched 164 drones at Ukraine overnight into August 28, striking at least 16 locations across the country and damaging warehouses, a shopping center and other civilian infrastructure, while disrupting rail traffic.
Ukraine's Air Force said Russia used Shahed attack drones, Gerbera drones and decoys in the assault, which began on the evening of August 27. About half of the attack drones were jet-powered.
As of 9 a.m., Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 137 drones, according to the Air Force. Strikes were recorded at 16 locations, while debris from intercepted drones fell at four others. The attack was still ongoing, with about 10 Russian drones remaining in Ukrainian airspace.
Repeated strikes in Kyiv Oblast
In Kyiv Oblast, Russian drones hit Nova Poshta warehouses and damaged a nearby production facility in the village of Sviatopetrivske, local authorities said.
Russian forces then struck the same location twice more about an hour after the initial attack, as emergency crews were working at the scene. Rescuers managed to move to a safer location before the strikes.
Ukraine's State Emergency Service said rescuers in Kyiv Oblast had faced 13 repeated Russian strikes while responding to attacks since August 27. Air raid alerts in Kyiv and the surrounding region lasted for more than 14 hours in total that day.
Emergency crews were still responding to fires and other damage on the morning of August 28.
Shopping center hit in Zaporizhzhia
A Russian strike also damaged an Epicentr shopping center in the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, regional governor Ivan Fedorov said. Preliminary reports indicated that one person required medical assistance.
The strike came a day after a Russian drone hit another Epicentr shopping center in Kharkiv.
Ukrainian officials have recently warned of intelligence indicating a possible Russian threat to large shopping centers, particularly in frontline cities.
Rail traffic disrupted
Ukraine's state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia said it had not canceled services because of the attacks, but trains across the country were experiencing significant delays.
Some routes may be shortened, with passengers transferred to other trains for the final part of their journeys, as the railway works to restore its schedule.
