Russia launches 267 drones at Ukraine; deadly detonations follow strike near Kyiv

Ukraine’s Air Force said that as of 8:30 a.m. local time, air defenses had shot down or suppressed 233 Shahed, Gerbera and other types of drones across northern, southern, eastern and central Ukraine.

Hits were recorded at 15 locations, while debris from intercepted drones fell at four more. The Air Force said some of the Russian weapons did not reach their targets, with details still being clarified.

Deadly detonations near Kyiv

The most serious consequences were reported in the village of Myla in Kyiv Oblast, where a Russian drone struck or fell on the grounds of an enterprise at around 8:10 p.m. on Aug. 28, according to Ukrainian prosecutors.

A large fire broke out at the site, followed by detonations. Kyiv Oblast Governor Tymur Tkachenko said on the morning of Aug. 29 that people had been killed, but did not give an exact number as emergency crews continued working at the scene.

At least five people were injured, while more than 200 people, including children, were evacuated overnight.

One private home was destroyed and seven others were damaged. A fire truck and a residential care facility for elderly people were also damaged.

Authorities temporarily closed a section of the M-06 Kyiv-Chop highway between kilometers 15 and 32 as emergency services worked at the scene.

Ukraine’s Prosecutor General’s Office opened an investigation into both the Russian attack and possible official negligence. Investigators are examining whether explosive materials and objects were legally stored at the enterprise, whether the necessary permits were in place, and the actions of responsible officials.

Prime Minister Serhii Koretskyi said the incident showed that a similar case in the nearby city of Vyshneve in July “had not become a lesson.”

During a Russian attack on Vyshneve in early July, a ballistic missile struck an ammunition warehouse belonging to a Ukrainian defense enterprise, triggering large secondary explosions that lasted for hours and forced more than 600 people to evacuate. Prosecutors later said large quantities of ammunition had been stored in unsuitable premises without the required permits.

“Making the same mistakes in the fifth year of the full-scale invasion is criminal negligence,” Koretskyi said, calling for those responsible to be held accountable.

Casualties reported across Ukraine

Elsewhere, at least one person was killed and three were injured in southern Odesa Oblast. Five trucks carrying grain were destroyed by fire and another three were damaged, according to regional authorities.

One person was killed and 15 others were injured as a result of Russian attacks on Zaporizhia and Zaporizhia district on August 28. The occupiers launched 932 strikes on 48 settlements in Zaporizhia region.

Russian strikes on Kherson Oblast killed one person and injured 26 others, including a child. Seven apartment buildings, 15 private homes, a cell tower, a gas pipeline, a shop, ambulances and other vehicles were damaged.

In Sumy Oblast, 12 people were injured in Russian attacks over the past day. Overnight, a drone struck medical vehicles parked on the grounds of a hospital in the city of Sumy, damaging two ambulances, a civilian vehicle and the entrance to the medical facility. No one was injured in that strike.

Two people were injured in Kyiv’s Sviatoshynskyi district, where a private house was damaged.

Russian drones also targeted port and civilian infrastructure in Mykolaiv Oblast. Regional authorities said Russian Banderol cruise missiles attempted to strike energy infrastructure in Mykolaiv and the surrounding district, damaging several residential and administrative buildings, garages and a vehicle. No casualties were reported.

On the evening of August 28, Banderol cruise missiles attempted to attack an energy infrastructure facility in the city. The windows of three apartment buildings, an administrative building, three garages, and a car were damaged. Banderols were also launched at an energy infrastructure facility in the Mykolaiv district. There were no injuries.
